Two Great Shows

Hello Peeps-

Sorry to be so quiet on the blog and so very bad at putting new pieces on the website. I have them, I just can't seem to find the time to get them up...so why not come and see them in person?-always the best way anyway.

I have two Boston area show happening this weekend before I head down to NYC for my big show. If you're in the neighborhood, these look like great shows and I would love to see you!

I have been so busy this summer, keeping up with shows and just really getting into making new things, it keeps me up at night (that's why I look so sleepy at the markets, fyi ;).

I will post more often!

For this rainy Monday, here's a few new lockets to check out:

I have started making the mini lockets on a short, beaded chain. Like my other short necklaces, they are adjustable from 16 to 18 inches.

One of A Kinds

Whew. I just finished with a major update of the website which included (at long last) some "one-of-a-kinds", along with some "few-of-a-kinds". These are mostly geodes and impressive gemstone specimens. Have a look:

There are LOTS more geodes to come-beautiful, amazing colors and sparkle. However, they need holes drilled in them. And that is my work today. I can't guarantee they will ever get up on the website as the "summer crunch" is just about to begin. if you are particularly interested in geodes, send me an email and you can choose your own!

I finally found a "good" bumblebee stamp for a locket.

I love the colors. This one is from Norway.

And so, I needed a related quote for the reverse.

Actually, just about any of the quotes I use would do,

as I try not to make particularly obvious links between the quote and image.

However, this quote struck me.

Perhaps it is strange to put on a locket, and maybe not something you would want to give as a gift.

But, I thought it was beautiful.

And just a nice thought:

I finally had time to work on some new lockets.

Lucky for you I have become obsessed with stamp collecting now and have found some real beauties lately, as you can see above. All of these particular stamps are "'one -of -a -kinds" for now...get ém while you can!

Also, this weekend I will be hitting two great shows around town. On Saturday I will be at the Coolidge Corner Arts Festival, and Sunday I will have my last show until the Fall at SoWa.

Monk Stalking

I just want to say, before we begin, that I am not alone in monk stalking.
In fact, it seems that nearly everyone who visits Angkor Wat has the same affliction.

Monks are like celebrities while they are at Angkor, and the tourists are the paparazzi. Just so you know.
The thing is, the temples at Angkor are really old-like 1000 years old, so naturally their color shows this-they are gray and black. Then, a monk comes along in an intense saffron robe. The contrast is stunning color-wise and the imagery created is....perfect.

Can you blame me?

That little kid was lucky his outfit worked with the color scheme-

otherwise he would've been cropped!

This young monk turned the tables and asked for a photo of me,

after which I did the same to him, of course. Isn't he sweet?

But generally, monks are more into the temple (that's why they came all this way, right?) and take photos of the amazing art and history there. They must be confused as to why we take pictures of them instead of that.

I surprised this monk as he turned a corner. This was a true stalking. I'm sorry.

Apsara at Angkor

I knew coming to Thailand this year I would make an effort to get to Angkor Wat in Cambodia. I kicked myself many a time for not going before when I traveled in Asia about 12 years ago. This time I had less time to spare, just three days, so I went shutterbug crazy. I tried to actually not take so many pictures, to just enjoy, appreciate and absorb the wonder that comes with wandering through ancient ruins. Alas, it didn't work out exactly that way, so I have lots of pictures to share (but also had plenty of heat/humidity induced stupors when I hazily took it all in, sitting on a pile of prettily toppled architecture).

The apsara are nymphs who cast their spell on everyone who enters the temples, I would say. I love the details, of course; intricate "hair-dos" and elaborate headpieces, delicate hand gestures, layers of jewelry and finery, each individual expression (in a word, happy) and the perfect affect a thousand years can have.

First, to get a sense of where I was, this is Angkor Wat, very early in the morning.

It's huge.

And all around, you can see these beauties. They are "standing on the outside and dancing on the inside", according to one unofficial guide. I thought that sounded like a good analogy for....something.

I have always been fascinated with jewelry in ancient cultures
so it's wonderful to see it (almost) in person.

Life in The Temple

It is very generous of the monks, I think, to allow us to ramble aimlessly around the temples here. They live here after all. What a gift to be able to wander in off a hot, noisy city street. The contrast is quickly felt and much appreciated. As well, there are flowers and works of art everywhere. I do find myself envying the monks and their bit of paradise...

Peaceful, clean, beautiful, quiet. I love visiting temples.....as you can see.

Bangkok Flower

At first, this flower reminded me of my favorite tree, the pink mimosa, always blooming when I am on the Vineyard (can't wait for that..the smell is heavenly).

This one, however, is mostly white, with the pink just at the tips, and tiny yellow spots that catch your eye. It fell in a park, by the river. Silky and and so delicate, it is no match for this city, the asphalt it fell onto, the women ready to sweep it up before another one can fall and join it.

On second thought, this flower reminded me of here, Bangkok. It is both "showy" and sweet. The slender stems like the locals; always busy, going this way and that, somehow all coming together into a beautiful ensemble.

It seems that most temples here in a continual state of decay and restoration. There is always work to do, I suppose on a three or four hundred year old structure. Wandering around a temple I'll inevitably find a pile of ancient looking debris, waiting to be reused, or just waiting.

I love to save old things, too.

Sometimes when things are overwhelming (the news, for example) it's easier for me to focus on small things. The temples here in Chaing Mai are truly impressive. Some large, some small, most very old, and all completely covered in glitter and gold. It's hard not to take pictures of all that, and I do, but I end up liking the "unimpressive" details best.

These three little buddha statues were placed in random, out-of- the- way spots in various temples.

I wonder how and why they got where they did.
I will never know, but somehow they let me feel part of a peaceful moment.

well, sort of. Back here on the blog, anyway. So sorry to be away for so long....January just wasn't worth mentioning unless you happen to really be into snow. I'm not. February was busy-hopping down to Tucson for the massive gem and jewelry shows. It was my first time and definitely overwhelming, but I found some great things for the upcoming Spring and Summer season- beautiful ammonite fossils, sparkling geodes and cool new gemstone links. Next, back to Boston and made a reservation to go to Thailand. Where I sit right now, in the (surprisingly strong)heat and humidity. But I'll take it over the snow any day. Besides which, it's fascinating to me, so get ready for lots of pictures of buddhas, temples and exotic flowers. Oh, and a few new designs I managed to work on before leaving (I love them, and am so excited to share with you soon!).

Helping Hands

I spent this past Saturday night at a wonderful event to benefit this amazing organization. I was asked to come to Helping Hands' annual fund raising gala and participate as a vendor, donating part of the proceeds to the organization. I was truly honored to do so!
Helping Hands trains and places monkey helpers with people who have disabilities and can benefit from the dexterity and intelligence of these monkeys. The event was held at the new-ish LEED-certified (important to me:)WGBH studios. There was great live music, gourmet treats from top Boston area restaurants, drinks, dancing and presentations about Monkey Helpers. They also had screenings of their new documentary. It was a fun evening for me and I was just really on the sidelines. The dedication of the trainers and of course the monkeys is really unbelievable to me. It was very moving to see this kind of commitment to helping people with disabilities. If you are looking for a unique organization to donate to this holiday season (I know there are so many!), this would be a wonderful choice.

Ode to Pyrite

I am in love with Pyrite.

This is strange because it's not a stone I have used for long.

It's not a stone similar to the types I have been using forever. It's not a stone which you can easily identify (what color is that anyway?). It's a stone that is a bit "rough around the edges" in appearance.

But it just seems to go with almost anything I think of pairing it with.

Like a refined, faceted Citrine.

Or bright white sterling chain.

Rich black oxidized silver and gold.

Or pearls and subtly colored gemstones.

And here's another favorite you may have already seen.

The necklace above is a new favorite, which sold out twice before I could actually get a picture of it! It seems to just really "work" when people try it on. It was difficult to photograph this piece in it's entirety, as it has lots going on, so I hope you can get the feel for it here. I think it would be a great holiday party necklace!

Sadly, my last Providence Open Market show was canceled for tomorrow due to high winds. I hope to be back next year! It looks like great weather again this weekend-perfect for going to a market! I will be at my first Providence Open Market on Saturday, and back at the super-fun South End Open Market on Sunday (where I bought the most amazing orange cranberry bread and picked up an adorable poncho for my niece).
I just bolted back from NYC yesterday after a furious week of gem shopping. I have a gorgeous huge stash to work from now and will be posting new designs this week (along with some much sought-after items which had been out of stock).

I could easily spend an entire day wandering a long stretch of (deserted, please)beach, searching for the little treasures it gives up to me-a shell, a striped stone, and once a perfectly whole perfectly frosted blue marble. There is something about the looking, the sound of the waves and the solitude I just can't get enough of.

Finally!! My rings are here! These were a vision, of sorts, and I am pleased to present them to you now. This project combines my love of rings (I have been wanting to have rings in my shop for an eternity it seems...) with my love of words and the way they can affect me, and hopefully you, too. I wanted the quotes on the rings to be especially for the wearer, so they are a bit of a secret. By all appearances, these appear to be very pretty rings with colorful groups of stones.

When you turn your hand over, however, you will find a message, a reminder, a direction perhaps. Just for you to see and no one else.

This one here is the quintessential summertime ring. With a quote I have used many times. It is from a part of an Emerson poem and goes:
"...live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air..."
It always feels more appropriate to me in summer, especially here on the Vineyard.

Well, I actually had this shell necklace in the shop last Summer, but love it so much, I brought it back. This year, it's updated with more intense color from a bright blue Apatite gemstone and a little shot of lime green Peridot. Put this on in June, and it'll stay all summer long....

Swimming your way...

While in Bali I met a young man who carves amazing works of art out of unusual materials. This little seahorse is hand-carved from fossilized mammoth tusk, a beautiful creamy color.

I found lots of information about seahorse symbolism and general facts when researching to write something enlightening here. My favorite two tidbits: in the seahorse world the male carries the babies! And, in Hawaiian culture, the seahorse symbolizes eternal friendship. Personally, I think they're kind of fascinating.

I'll be listing lots of new things in the shop this week, including this baby.

It was all about...

Him and Her

As I mentioned before, I lost my guide during most of this ceremony, so I really don't know what was up with these two....were they local royals? The future king and queen? Two kids representing past royalty? I don't know, but I can say this boy here was all over it-very cool, calm and collected, very comfortable with his apparent status and future life of luxury. This young lady was more.....irritated. At first, she was in a small pavilion where lots of women primped her. She had just had enough, and the show hadn't even started yet.

And then, things did start and they were literally picked up and carried (awkwardly) away.

To a spot where they were apparently blessed (held aloft the entire time).

They appeared reverential when it was time...no more sourpuss (even though she was slipping off her carrier the entire time).

Then whisked away again and hoisted onto the tiniest ledge of an altar where they had an audience with two seriously spiritual looking men-priests/holy men/community leaders?
who each continually chanted their own tunes and did some bell ringing.

There was (a lot) more to the procession, actually....so I'll hold off on the stars of this show until tomorrow. Here is a bit more of our walk down the road to a temple set back in the jungle, just above a gorge and swiftly flowing river.

A Ceremony

Bali is full of ceremonies large and small. Last week, I happened upon two on the same day. One large, one small. These pictures are from "the big one". This was a ceremony that happens only every 150 years. I wish I could tell you more about the specifics, because it was quite fascinating, but you see, I lost my "guide" before it even really began. At most ceremonies I have been to, someone-usually a man-will come over and explain what the heck is going on. Balinese are rightly very proud of their culture and spectacular religious ceremonies and art traditions. So, I was being told about some of the preparations of this ceremony (that "only every 150 years" bit stuck in my head) when it was about to begin. We were all inside the main temple in town waiting for a break in the rain to start the procession to another temple down the road a ways. It was suggested that as soon as the rain stopped, I go out to the street to get the best shots (by now the locals know what most of us tourists really want!). So I did, and I didn't see my guide for the rest of the time-several hours of sometimes chaotic, curious and very colorful events.
So, my pictures will have to speak for themselves. As I took an embarrassing amount of photos, I'm going to break it down for you. Today we have: "Girls getting ready".

At the MotherTemple

I happened to take a tour with some other visitors to Bali up to the "Mother Temple",Pura Besakih. It is up on Mount Agung, where the air was so cool, I wanted to move in. However, several thousand people were making their way in and out of the temple over several days at that time, so it might have been a tad irksome. Yet another of Bali's ceremonies was happening. Couldn't get the specifics on this one, but it seemed pretty major to me. Here are some shots from that rainy day:

Entrance to the main temple, there are many temples within Besakih. Depending on your position, you pray and give offerings at a certain temple (I believe this has to do with the caste sysytem which unfortunately still exists in Balinese culture).

I wanted to join this caste, whatever they were, definitely the best looking temple to me. Loved all the red. They were not at the highest level, that would be yellow. I am ok with that.

I loved these tall tall banners that were everywhere, swaying in the breeze....I miss that breeze down here in the lowlands!

We actually went to a few other places on this one day tour-will post about that soon!

Funny Bird

A funny thing happened the other day. I went to the Bali Bird Park and got THE most amazing photos of all kinds of exotic (to me, a new englander) birds. I got back to my little homestay and struggled to find room for these new treasures on my computer already loaded with lots and lots of pictures (a lot of clouds got puffed away...), got them on, and then promptly deleted every last one. This funny bird, however, was on my other, small camera (the one I actually know how to use) and so here is the only visual account of my trip:

Inspiration

New lockets are in! These are a bit different from my other lockets. Simpler, but still sweet, and admiring of nature, particularly the signs of a long awaited Spring. As you can see, I have a new, smaller size locket in both sterling and gold vermeil. I love working with this new size, hanging them from a thin sterling or gold filled chain along with just one sparkly little gem. The images are from a vintage book which I copied and then silk screened onto clear acetate, for a clean, graphic look. The new small size are about the diameter of a dime, the larger ones around the size of a quarter. More of these vintage images will be coming along later in the Spring.

Locket Madness!

I have never had so many lockets in the shop at once! Most of these images are brand new and one-of-a-kinds. Some have the most amazing detail (the Irish and English seem to have the best detail of all the countries I have seen so far). I have learned a lot about stamps, birds, butterflies and bunnies (!!) through this latest batch. It's nice to have a bit of time to really study them and maybe even research a bit. I also added some new quotes to this group. Don't be shy-if you have a quote you'd like to use instead, just send it along. I love for these lockets to be personal and meaningful. I can't wait for them to go out to their new owners!

Hearts to Haiti

As my feelings of wanting to help more in Haiti were growing, I had been working on some Valentines Day pieces for the shop. I have never made jewelry for a particular special day before, but for some reason this was the year, and February 14th is the day.

This sweet necklace in particular stood out to me, as I had the feeling of wanting to send my heart to Haiti, and now you can too. When you purchase one of these necklaces, ten dollars will go directly to Partners in Health, a wonderful organization which has been working in Haiti for many years and will be there for years to come as well. Sol has new prints! She emailed me a while back, but I was in the throes of mass production. I just now had time to really look at her latest and greatest and of course, I love them!
Especially this one, as I am a committed tea drinker:

And this one because of the fab colors and my "need" to go to India someday....

Sol's attention to detail are what makes her work so lovely (for me, it's the little "puffs" from the spout/trunk in these images that make me smile). I can vouch for the high quality of her work, as I am lucky enough to own a few.

A Royal Treat

I haven't seen Lapis Lazuli around a lot lately, so when I came across it on a gem buying trip recently, I jumped. These are big, impressive pieces, faceted and flecked with golden pyrite. For this piece I wove them into a fan shape and linked it all into gold vermeil chain. Lapis has been worn for centuries, prized by ancient civilizations and worn by royalty. So, get your inner Nefertiti on and show off!

This beautiful chain has a beaded, twisted wire texture to it, which adds a definite sparkle. The links are large-about an inch long, but the chain itself is extremely light and comfortable. These are a generous 34 inches long-great for layering with lots of other cool chains and necklaces, or just double it up and be done. Very versatile, it will be worn often!
This chain is also available in a short (18 inch) version and as a bracelet-to be posted on the site soon.

Elodie is 4!!
This is amazing! I was there, at her birth, and just can't believe four years has flown by so fast. Now, she has a little sister who dreams and talks about her all the time. I can understand why. Elodie is captivating. Smart as a whip and sweet as pie. She is curious about everything.

This is one of my favorite pictures of Elodie. We were at the Jeff Koons exhibit a few years ago at the Met, up on the roof! Elodie was beyond excited to see this massive balloon dog. She jumped and danced and ran around him for a good hour. It was so wonderful to see that kind of excitement. I look forward to many more years of wonder with sweet Elodie.

Lockets

I have finally listed some lockets in the shop!

These seem to speak to people. They are very pretty, true. They are made from sweet vintage postage stamps of birds and butterflies. They have a colorful cluster of gemstones jangling about. They are made of bright shiny sterling silver, a substantial locket which feels like an heirloom.
But it seems to be the various quotes people connect to. I am often told why that is, and several times I have cried. People tell me stories of someone at a hard point in their life, sometimes having to do with sickness or loss. Other times they are bought for happier occasions, often graduations-a time to go out and experience the world! Whatever the reasons, I am always so happy and honored to be a part of the whole experience, to have made something to be given with great love and meaning. It has really made me think about and change my ideas about what jewelry can be.
Here is one quote I often use and love, but did not end up in any of these particular lockets:

...and August blew by me. Whew! I am back in Boston, missing the Vineyard (but get to go back soon for my vacation!). Since being back, I have gone down to NYC (love love love Bolt Bus) for a start to my gem shopping and found some lovely things, as usual. Just as soon as I can make them up, I will share them.

In the meantime, I have a few Fall shows coming up where you can see previews of the the new Fall/Winter line as it develops.

The other night I could not sleep. I was exhausted and turned in (on a Saturday night-I am officially "old") at 9:30. All night I tossed and turned. I woke early, exhausted. The "problem" was: too many ideas. This is a recurring theme in my life, but only every six months or so does it keep me up all night. Here are the culprits:

It's the whole oxidized silver look. I can't get enough! I am worried that the "Fall and Winter 09 Collection" (which these images are a part of) will be completely black, moody, industrial, faded elegance....oh well, at least I'll get some sleep.

As you can easily see, this here is a child who lives a lot in each and every day! Gracie is a fabulous reader (she even wrote to her favorite author and he wrote back!), amazing jungle gym-er, super fast on the scooter, loves to play dress-up, completes puzzles in seconds, wins a lot at Uno, and gets really excited about just about everything!
Her enthusiasm for life is inspiring!

A lesson learned

Every year I go to work (and shop) at a huge bead show in Milwaukee. Every year my heart beats a bit faster as I approach a certain booth. This one particular man finds, cuts and drills the most amazing stones, fossils, vintage glass, and just about anything else he can get his hands on-including what looks like billiard balls and something he calls "ford-ite". I basically spend any free time and a good chunk of my salary at this booth. Two years ago, I bought a gorgeous ammonite fossil there and decided it would be just for me. This is rare (the decision and the fossil, both) and almost as soon as I got home, I stung it up with keishi pearls and aquamarines, bringing out the irridescent pale blues and pinks of the surface.
A few days later, I went "off-island" to do a big three-day show in the Berkshires. I love it there, but the show was not a good one for me. In foolish desperation, I put my ammonite necklace on the table. An hour later it sold. And I felt terrible. Was nothing sacred? Was I worshiping the almighty dollar? Where were my principles? Never again, I promised myself.
This past June, I was off to Milwaukee again. No sooner had I walked into the massive show, I ran into "my stone man" Gary. I went with him directly to his booth and told him the story of how I had been waiting a year to redeem myself. I found another ammonite (plus several fabulous geodes-for you) which struck me with its colors and shape. The other day, playing with some new pearls, the idea for the new necklace came together quickly- and this was the result.

It fits my neck perfectly and the feeling of wearing something which is more than 100 million (think about that for a second) years old makes me feel grounded, connected and reminds me to appreciate this moment in time.

Girl at the Museum

It was a sunny early Spring day, but the tea party in the garden with her favorite dolls was suddenly, and quite unfairly she thought, canceled. They were going to the museum for the day. It was to be her first time going, and not a time for fun, she was told, but for learning. So off they went to wait for the bus.

She asked what she might be seeing at this museum, but her father only suggested that it was just too much to explain. She was glad to be off the bus, and as they quietly made their way up the long drive to the entrance, she saw her first clues as to what might be inside. Two saber-toothed cats watched her approach, debating whether or not she should be allowed in. As the family walked closer, she felt smaller and a little nervous. She clasped her hands tightly in front of her as she always did when she felt this way. It was odd for a child to hold herself like that, all tight and proper. But that is how she had always been.

Her father wanted to use his new camera. She was ordered to stand on the steps with her mother and not to make even the slightest movement. On the steps she squinted in the sun and watched as he walked farther and farther away. Finally he turned around. He could get it all in now. He yelled something to them which she could not hear. Her mother told her to stand up straight. She was feeling warm now, in the sun with the big cats eyeing her. Her mother did not hold her hand or put an arm around the girl for the photo. She was not that kind of mother.

Her father walked back to them. Now, they could go in. Through the big doors and into a light-filled circular space. She stepped cautiously and looked up to where the sun streamed in. Dust danced in the light as she heard her mother whispering something to her father about mismatched cuff links. The girl looked at him and he made a funny face, quickly.
He studied the floor plans and they began.

A bookish man, her father lectured her at length about many things: the pressure gemstones had to endure, the patience required of fossils, helpful hind legs, and the convenience of being a stick insect.

But, for the first time in her young life, she was not listening.

Her mind raced, her imagination blossomed, and as if she had drank a psychedelic drug, she found herself walking amongst massive beasts. Insects buzzed everywhere, and heavy tropical scents made her almost dizzy. She held cool sparkling stones in the palm of her hand and felt the softest of feathers brush against her neck. She flew though the sky nestled on the back of a huge black bird, holding tight to a rider who looked to be from an entirely different universe.
Creatures she could not have imagined approached her with wonder.
They eyed each other. Then smiled.

As they left, she felt not sad, but exhilarated. Her mind and imagination was full to bursting. She knew she would be back again and again and she felt...different. Bold? There was, she now knew, so much to see in this beautiful world.

As they walked back down the long driveway, her father felt inspired to take a photo with an artistic angle of the the museum. He asked them to pose again as he started walking backwards away from them. He tripped once and decided that was a good distance. "Don't move" he said.

But this time, the girl took a slight step forward, away from her mother.

She was on her way.

If you are ever in Buenos Aires, you should make the effort to go to the Natural History Museum in La Plata-it is amazing! I went just once, but could go back "again and again". When I did go, I was so excited to get in there, I forgot to take pictures of this impressive building. Luckily, I found these two photos at the flea market in San Telmo, intertwining the memories of my trip with this little girl's.
